Laws and regulations regarding life science researches differ depending on the contents of the research and the samples to be used. Researchers shall understand the applicable laws and regulations and follow the required procedures before conducting research.

The Nagoya Protocol stipulates measures to be taken by provider countries and user countries of genetic resources to ensure access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization (ABS: Access and Benefit-Sharing). Faculty members and students shall follow the procedure manual at Kyoto University when acquiring genetic resources from overseas subject to the Nagoya Protocol.

Research involving human subjects includes research that is prohibited by laws and regulations, such as creation of a human clone individual, and research that requires domestic procedures in addition to internal university procedures.<br />
Researchers are required to comply with laws and regulations.

Before conducting research involving human subjects, it is necessary to submit a research protocol to an appropriate Ethical Review Committee for review and approval. Research protocol (including human genome research) subject to the “Ethical Guidelines for Medical and Biological Research Involving Human Subjects (hereinafter referred to as “Human Guidelines))” must be reviewed by the Medical Ethics Committee. We receive all research protocols from departments that do not have the Medical Ethics Committee, and check whether they are subject to the Human Guidelines.<br />
Clinical trial plan subject to the “Clinical Trials Act” must be reviewed by the Certified Clinical Trials Review Board. Research plan for providing regenerative medicine subject to the “Laws on Securing Safety of Regenerative Medicine, etc.” must be reviewed by the Certified Special Committee for Regenerative Medicine.
